Founded on a Sawmill, Listed Along Five Roads
Holsey Gates bought 130 acres along the Chagrin River in 1826 for a sawmill site, and the mills that followed gave the village its name. When they closed, no industry replaced them. In 1991 the National Register listed the Gates Mills Historic District, roughly along Berkshire, Chagrin River, Epping, Old Mill and Sherman Roads, and Western Reserve architecture still lines them.
