Named for Beech Woods, Built in a Single Generation
Beech woods gave Beachwood its name. It became a village in 1915 and a city in 1960. The population went from 372 in 1940 to 9,631 in 1970, and one generation of building set the exteriors street after street, the same era of siding and concrete repeating house to house. Most of the city stayed residential all the same: homes, condominiums, schools and synagogues.
Commerce Park Brought a Different Kind of Dirt
Commerce Park opened in 1962, Commerce Park Square in 1966 as the area's first major office complex, and the Chagrin Boulevard retail followed I-271 in. Gum, grease and oil are what collect on that side of town, and each of them takes its own treatment.
