The Village That Voted Not to Be Annexed
Adamson Bentley bought the land where the Aurora Branch meets the Chagrin River in 1831 and built a sawmill and a gristmill on it; the settlers after him added a tannery and worked a stone quarry out of the same valley. When Chagrin Falls moved to annex the ground around them, residents circulated petitions and in 1929 incorporated Bentleyville instead. There are 897 people inside it today.

The South Chagrin Reservation accounts for some 540 acres of Bentleyville's 2.75 square miles, and the trees do not stop at the park boundary. Not everything they drop is alive.
